On June 14,2012, the Moscow Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International hosts more than 250 Russians and Americans to celebrate Russia Day at a black-tie gala at the Chicago Cultural Center. The event honors Russia’s national holiday, which is celebrated on June 12 and commemorates the day when the Russian Parliament formally declared sovereignty over Russia in 1990. This is the second year that Russia Day has been celebrated in Chicago.
His Excellency Sergey I. Kislyak, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United States, holds the keynote speech and highlights the importance of strengthening the relationships between the United States and Russia, focusing on the similarities between Chicago and Moscow.
In honor of Russia Day, the Moscow Committee of CSCI also organizes a day-long broadcast featuring Russian music and a Russian language story time for children. They also presents donations to the Campanella Children’s Choir, as well as to several World War II veterans from both the Russian and American sides.
