From February 12–22, the City of Hamburg is celebrating its sister cities. Each day, a different city will be featured in Hamburg’s Europa Passage, a large shopping mall and destination for residents and tourists. Mayor of Hamburg Olaf Scholz was present to officially kick off the celebration on February 12.
On February 17 from 10 a.m.–8 p.m., Chicago was featured at a booth in the center of the Europa Passage with videos, a documentary on Chicago’s bridges, tourism brochures and information on the Hamburg Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International. Chair of the Hamburg Committee of CSCI Rolf Achilles was present at the booth throughout the day to talk about Chicago and the sister city relationship between Hamburg and Chicago. 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the sister city relationship between the two cities.
In addition, Mr. Achilles gave a lecture and presentation on February 18 at Hamburg’s City Hall on the Chicago School of Architecture. Following the presentation, a reception took place to officially kick off the 20th anniversary year between Chicago and Hamburg. The event was a great success with a capacity crowd of nearly 300 at the event and was attended by government and civic leaders, including the U.S. Consul General in Hamburg.
As part of this celebration, the City of Hamburg is also sponsoring a photo contest where you can vote for your favorite photo from a sister city of Hamburg. The prizes are a seven-day trip to Shanghai and a five-day safari in Tanzania. To vote and enter the contest, visit the contest website.
