DELHI: India’s Defining Moment
The Delhi Committee of CSCI and World Business Chicago are sponsoring The Chicago Council on Global Affairs’ discussion India’s Defining Moment with His Excellency S. Jaishankar, Ambassador of the Republic of India to the United States at The Peninsula Chicago.
The slowdown of the Indian economy in the last two years has dampened spirits after a decade of growth. However, with 1.2 billion people and proven successes in sectors like technology, pharmaceuticals, and outsourcing operations, India can possibly compete with markets like China. May’s national elections may set India on a more positive course for the future, as politicians aim to tackle major issues such as infrastructure development, corruption, and economic reforms. Join The Chicago Council and India’s new ambassador to the United States for his first speech, where he will discuss how India will position itself to confront this year’s challenges, prospects for economic growth, and the US-Indian strategic partnership.
His Excellency Dr. S. Jaishankar became ambassador of India to the United States in December 2013. Most recently, he was the ambassador of India to China from 2009 to 2013. Dr. Jaishankar led the Americas division in the Ministry of External Affairs from 2004 to 2007, and then served as high commissioner to Singapore until 2009. From 2000 to 2004, he was the ambassador of India to the Czech Republic and served as deputy chief of mission in Tokyo from 1996 to 2000. In 1990, Dr. Jaishankar became commercial counsellor in Budapest. After three years in that position, he returned to India where he served as director of East Europe division of the Ministry of External Affairs, and as press secretary for the President of India. He is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. Dr. Jaishankar holds a PhD and MPhil from Jawaharlal Nehru University and a MA in political science.
