Ireland: Can the Celtic Tiger Roar Again?

The Galway Committee of CSCI is sponsoring a speech and discussion presented by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs with Her Excellency Anne Anderson, Ambassador of Ireland to the United States, titled “Ireland: Can the Celtic Tiger Roar Again?”

The Irish economy has emerged from recession and has grown more rapidly than the eurozone as a whole. The signals of a revival of the country’s economic fortunes drew admiration from Chancellor Angela Merkel who praised Prime Minister Enda Kenny for the reforms just one day after her party’s reelection. However, the economy is still fragile—there is growing impatience as Ireland enters its sixth year of austerity and unemployment remains high. Join The Chicago Council and Ireland’s newly appointed ambassador to the US for a discussion on US-Ireland bilateral relations, the ongoing recovery in Europe, Ireland’s interests in US immigration reform and other key issues.

Her Excellency Anne Anderson became the Irish ambassador to the United States in September 2013. She is the first female ambassador of Ireland to the US. Previously, Anderson was the permanent representative of Ireland to the United Nations and Ireland’s ambassador to France. She joined the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs in 1972 and has held posts in various parts of the world, including Washington, DC, Geneva and Brussels. Her previous responsibilities also include chair of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, vice president of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, and chair of the trade policy review body of the World Trade Organization. Anderson received her BA from Dublin’s University College and her legal studies diploma from Kings Inns.
