LAHORE: Pakistan’s Paradigm Shift
CSCI is sponsoring the Chicago Council on Global Affairs’ public program Pakistan’s Paradigm Shift, with His Excellency Jalil Abbas Jilani, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the US.
Pakistan is turning a page by instituting new measures to tackle its militancy problem and implementing dramatic economic reforms aimed at addressing a host of domestic challenges beyond just terrorism. It also seeks to move away from a narrative of antagonistic ties with the US and India to one of deeper cooperation to facilitate economic development. After a three year hiatus, the US and Pakistan in January reinstated their Strategic Dialogue, which covers everything from counterterrorism cooperation to bilateral trade, and Islamabad is taking steps to liberalize trade with India. Join Pakistan’s new Ambassador to the US, His Excellency Jalil Abbas Jilani, for a discussion on developments in Pakistan, the future of US-Pakistan ties, and other issues facing the country including an energy crisis and infrastructure development.
Ambassador Jalil Abbas Jilani became Pakistan’s ambassador to the US in January. Prior to his current post in Washington, Ambassador Jilani served as Pakistan’s foreign secretary from 2012 to 2013. He is a career diplomat and has also served as ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union during 2009-2012 and as Pakistan’s high commissioner to Canberra, Australia from 2007 to 2009. He has held a variety of positions at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including director for India from 1992 to 1995 and director general for South Asia and SAARC between 2003-2007. He was also deputy high commissioner/acting high commissioner to New Delhi from 1999 to 2003. Ambassador Jilani holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Law and M.Sc. in Defence and Strategic Studies.
